A red-tailed hawk flew out of my heart today
he glowed with copper feathers and leapt
from tree top to tree top

We drove through crow canyon beneath
eucalypts trees with menthol breath and peeling skin

Cawing crows black raptors of the night
perching on bare branches of ancient trees
swooping down for road kill
flying up to spread their great glistening
wings in the sun

Crow Canyon where we stopped for bagels
and I fell in love with you
watched you hold the steering wheel
everything you did endeared me
bonded me to you in the most
delicious way
