They claim it’s a soil with original sin,
Poisoned by nature with inherent depravity: heavy metals –
Chrome/Zinc/Lead-
And the altogether of it all today
In winter is a kind of beauty,
Scattered, stunted trees and winter-dried grasses,
With broken chips of rock beneath our Feet.

What a refuge from routine! It’s all so unfamiliar and perplexing we
Just might try making up names
For all that is fresh and New and beginning,
Just as it All was once
In Eden, for all we know.

You just never know:
Why was it so warm just yesterday
And typically cold today?
This February day is fittingly cold and quite Edenic and I can prove it –
Why it even had its serpent – that Garter snake –
Though too cold-blooded torpid
To even raise its head to tempt us.
