To capture the moment
when I ‘came to be’
My father hears of mother through relatives
This girl from deep country New York
The born city boy who has
the steady job of postal clerk in NYC
On their first date he puts on his best suit
takes her to the Broadway show – Oklahoma
Balcony seats but the music is great
She no less in her glory
Her outfit a fitted brown that
could not hide her ample breasts
He all politics and she all local yet
they find comfort in talk about movie stars
The saved playbills tell the story
the show – South Pacific
The song ‘Some Enchanted Evening’
In the small one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment
I ‘came to be’ and the yellowed playbill
Mother places with the others
on the shelf of
the only bookcase
