We see in looking back at olden times
Proverbial goods get overgooded
Into bads by cautionary figures.
Immersion reading dries up the brain
Of Senor Don Quixote, a sweet analysis
Winds up in souring ambitious Dr. Faustus,
And greed impels the profit-minded Scrooge
Right near the pit of hell.
Our looking back is looking down at
In a kind of wonder – how could the spirit of those times
Lead up to such as these?
There is the maxim taught by Blake:
Learn what’s enough by finding out
What’s all too much.
It’s an age-long admonition,
A lesson for the spirit of each and every time.
