I needed something to do.
Dark frayed edges intruded
inside my morning. My goals became
wrapped and hidden from view.

Outside the autumn air was warm
and sweet, a space to place myself,
fuse longing with a spotless sky.
I went out to sort and recycle
move the car, then move the garbage.

I backed slowly to the street, parked.
Had there been a sound?
I glanced to the driveway for a clue.
Something stirred, an orange cat.

Her large dark eyes became a pond
within a forest. Ancestor to the lioness
she lowered her head to rest
on the concrete surface.

Liquid air flowed between us.
She drank in her last breath.
Her thick mottled fur rippled,
a low growl, then she went still.

The day took shape starting with this agreement.
I was to meet her, then bid her farewell.
