I was blessed to grow up in a multicultural neighborhood in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the 60s and 70s. Our one block had families from India, China, Turkey, the Netherlands and three African American families. Neighborhood potlucks were an adventure. Daily life was varied and interesting. Like the time our neighbor taught belly dancing to all the neighbors’ kids on the front lawn. I didn’t realize at the time how unusual this was for the place and time. I’m grateful.
