Today is hallowed.
We are letting go of grudges, setting down our arms
asking “Why did we
waste precious days fighting, when we could
live in abundance,
enjoying ourselves and our time with each other?”

We don’t have to fight our ancestors’ battles.
They are not our battles.
Instead, we carry fresh apples and grapes
to our neighbors.
We bring warm, baked bread from many grains,
carry milk and cake
to share with those we have hurt.

We don’t need to own that little county
beside ours or mow down
the enemies in our own. What were we thinking?
We want peace enough
to create it for ourselves inside our borders and
to hope for it without.
Our military can play football for violence,
Olympic games for dominance.

Today is tallowed.
We light candles to see the path on which
each soul can find
a simple life, enjoying fresh mangos, blueberries
and plums. Each house,
its cheeses and cutlery, warm soups, salads and nuts.
Each home, soft pallets, pillows
and mattresses allowing the weary to rest.
