glass canyons glisten
the sun has found its place
over the lake
I’m swept away
by a wave of humanity
moving through shadows
while seeking my fortune
each building reaches upwards
into a blue, cloudless sky
I’m chasing dreams
a woman in a pantsuit entices
I stumble and she’s gone
each person goes
to their appointed place
I hold
conversations with myself
while searching for destiny
my destination for the morning
I notice
people never look at each other
on the elevator
I stand in a long line
fingerprinted and processed
to take an employment exam
the clerk doesn’t look at me
but half-heartedly
wishes me good luck
as I mark the answers
a look out the window
shows a man at a desk
and a pile of forms
in another building
on the same level as me
parallel lines drawn
