Did I read enough
tales to you about
characters that use
their cunning to overcome
adversity? Hansel anticipating
his father, then Gretel outfoxing
the witch? Odysseus finding
his way home? Charlotte weaving her
web to save Wilbur’s life?
When I saw you standing up
there, before everyone, saying
your vows, I thought: You’ve got this.
I knew you did. The way I knew
the first time you tried to feed
from me, grasping. I knew it
when you took those penalty shots against
Orono High School, even as I bargained
with God to not let you lose. I knew it
when you called me to say
you had proposed to your beloved
in front of the Eiffel Tower followed by
a Taylor Swift concert at Wembley Stadium.
I knew that you knew how
to make a fairy tale come true for her.
But there is one story we
don’t tell. It has started and we already
know the ending. Are you
ready for it? Because
I have more songs, more poems,
more prayers.
Someone bless these seeds I
sow ‘till the rain comes tumblin’
down. Do you
have enough? For Thou art
with me. Thy rod and Thy staff, they
comfort me. I have more! Do you
need more? Because you don’t seem
like you do, even though
you must. I have
so much more
if you need it. You only
need to say
the word.
