Sun shines silver
on quiet white caps
early in the day.

No one expects
the mist to whirl
and catch the wind

or for sky
to open its mouth,
to roar with shadows,

for kettle drums
to bang so loud they
burst the sound barrier,

for cymbals to clang
and dash the boat
into oblivion.
