Cetaceans glide along the gradients
where planktons whorl and nightjars
follow moth-light through the dark
where hominids trail the moose and elk
along their branching pathways strewn
with sugars proteins enzymes fats
the stuff of which we’re all composed
that each rapacious incarnated life
might seize and cycle through its eager gut
the substance of its circumstance and so
in turn deposit decompose return itself
to soil to air into the carrying dew
that carpets over all this ravening world
with opportunities and threats engenders
all that we regard as picturesque
conceals in beauty what comes after you.
