The man roused to madness
Buried beneath singed leaves
Bewildered by his surroundings
Scanning the desolate upland
His movement stirred a vile stench
Shifting ashes exposed decomposing flesh
He jerked up right aghast
Uncovering a child’s charred ponytail
Her lifeless gaze fixed on the orange sky
A rain of cinder sprinkling down on them
In minutes the ash veiling her again
An uneasy step forward on the vulnerable ground
Realizing the land composed of decaying bodies
Only then he recognized the agonizing wails
No previous memory could be conjured
His rebirth presently into this nightmare
He let out a howl and prayed for death.
