Shellshocked sanddabs
float to shore in ebb tides
neither full-frontal nudity
nor scale exploitation on display
they startled beachcombers
with illusionary blinks
          both floundering eyes
          located on the left.

Its wafer-thin skin crunches
like shoestring French fries

as sweet, white flesh melts
like lobster tails in butter sauce.

Comfortably camouflaged
on sea floors they nestled
belly side down into sandbars
and gritty ridges; as slim as crêpes
the bottom dwellers hunt, catch
and consume crustaceans
          with bookworm savagery
          chasing planktonic clouds 24/7.
