I heard a distant voice.
“Time to wake up, dear.
You can wake up now.”
Was it over? All I could recall
was a bright light over my head.
Then nothing. Had the instruments
been inside my body? The diseased parts
removed? It was so easy. Two days later,
I left the hospital.

Now I want to find that surgeon. Ask
him to repeat the operation on our country.
Put all the residents to sleep. Cut away
the disease that prevents the growth of
empathy, kindness, understanding of those
less fortunate. Then tell everyone it’s time
to wake up. Assure them they will find themselves
able to resume normal daily activities
with no adverse effects.
