All these people asked me
if the doctor
told her how much time –
like this is a chancy game show
and she, an excited, screaming player
standing before a famous host
who flips over a cardboard sign –
Surprise! You win nine more months!
The unsuspecting contestant,
masking her shock
in the face of the cameras,
carefully spinning around to
see if she can run back up
into the crowded aisles and
let someone else play instead.
And I answered yes.
Yes, he told her.
