What are you dreaming of
as you purr and snore
upon my lap,
curled in a bundle
your paws
over your eyes?

Are you dreaming
of cat-nip-laced
afternoons of leisure
ensconced in your
cozy cat bed?

Is there a movie
running through
your sweet head
of special times
of wandering outside
in the safety of
me at arm’s reach
yet feeling free
nonetheless?

Are you dreaming of
being warm
and safe
and loved
as that is also
your awake-reality?

And as you sleep
with one eye open
to the world
yet clearly fast asleep
are you simply playing
out your heritage of
needing to be
alert to danger
although you are
truly safe?
