on the day the moon
crosses Earth’s path
to block out Sol —
the source and soul of life —
darkness will drape itself
over the curve of our planet
covering the sun’s bright
shimmering tones
in thickening folds
only then can we look
into the god’s eye
for the brief span
of four long minutes
when the light returns
us to ordinary
what will we say
to the shadows
beckoning
from the cave walls?
