I slipped on ice I didn’t see and broke my pelvis that day.
How could I not have seen the ice lurking there
just waiting for me to step the wrong way?
As if I were assigned to create work for the EMT’s.
And the tired X-ray technician who told me
to scoot from gurney to X-ray table.
She had no one to help lift me.
ER doctor told me I was too young
to have broken a bone.
She was sure it was only a bruise.
ER doctor was certain it was only a bruise.
I could not have broken a bone.
She told me I was much too young for that.
X-ray technician had no one to help her.
“Scoot over to the table,” she said
sounding exhausted.
Maybe I was assigned to counter boredom for the EMT’s
just waiting for me to step the wrong way.
How could I not have noticed the ice lurking there?
