as I wake
to the New Year
all I see is blue

a sky covered in clouds
with a tiny hint of hope
tucked in behind

a blue heart-shaped rock
in the garden in my yard
as I sip the year’s first coffee

a bird
chattering in the bare-branch tree
reminding me that spring will come

the pen in my hand
capturing the first day’s rays
for this newly born year

my tender heart
with last-year’s grief
more stitches added, this morning

the vastness of my dreams
stretching out before me
an ocean of life

one lonely tear
where there used to be a river
a sign of healing

the flutter of wings
rustling somewhere deep yet familiar
the sound of possibility
