After Rod Serling said goodnight, you turned off
the black-and-white RCA and we moved
to porch rockers and watched stars shimmer

Yes lies on top of Yes
like one of a pair of lovers
or like a pair of socks
tightly rolled up together.

gaze there now
imagine what I was
when he didn’t yet
know my name

Sleep has abandoned me
forgotten the lullaby
a soft drift melody
singing me deep
when I was a child
when I was first formed

one of them bought
a watch
so the other one
bought a watch

I love the friends we’ve gathered here tonight
to walk with waters and ancient martyrs, to stalk
the lost grass, to kiss the frost in the night.

I bought in Oxford, England,
paper cup, plastic cup,
sprinkled with Demerara sugar,
why do I remember it
as the best in my life?

this is what Eternity’s
doing, too

I am no longer bruised,
battered infant wanting
not to be born yet thrust
in and out, in and out
by persistent contractions for three days

you soon learned
that everything is added on,
just one thing after another,
the privacy or water and
the exhibitionism of rain
