For a fund raiser
Boozie’s Bar took a lesson
from the big city
that sold chances on
rubber ducks cast
like bread on the waters
to race and win prizes for
supporters of the cause.

But it had been a dry summer
and the little creek
feeding Boozie’s harbor
was lethargic
and the rubber ducklings
just bobbed around
mindless in the non-current.

So, Donnie’s wader-clad boy
jumped in a flat-bottom,
poled up behind the flock
and whacked at the water
to create mini-waves
which made some competition,
but left many yellow racers
floundering in the reeds.

Number 17 won by a bill
and Johnnie won $200;
number 2, a free dinner;
and 24, 3rd-place,
a six-pack of his choice;
and the noble cause,
a lesson in how not to
follow big city trends.
