This year the cherry blossoms in
Athens, Georgia, burst like white novas,
every branch popcorned — bark,
a secret. Thirty-eight days of hard frost
lit the fuse of these floral firecrackers.
While somewhere in Patagonia
a guanaco accidently stepped
on a female silverdrop butterfly,
sending the province into recession.
Walking home from the bakery
I watch the sun vacillate whether or not
to strip today’s gray wallpaper of fog.
My steps halt — the corners of my mouth
slide slightly upwards, as I grasp that chance
and fortune always couple, but rarely
leave the party together.
