Why did I exit the train
at Perugia leaving
three small bags and
a black jacket with a torn pocket
to save my seat?

What pulled me off a train
headed to a city where
I’d always planned to go
leaving me in a city where
I never thought I’d be?

As the door clanged shut,
the train departing without me,
I held my hands to my head
not even able to make a sound.

I had tugged my most
treasured accumulations
behind me
like small children
and now they were gone.

Scanning my translucent reflection
in the apathetic window
of the departing train
I wondered if
I would ever be enough.
