One early morning driven
as a leaf by this incessant
wind of days, I watch
the way the chipmunk pauses
to survey
the littered garden,
and how the cardinal
always returns
to that same bush
across the yard.
What do they know that we forget?
Clouds veil
the sun but only
for a moment.
Does the chipmunk
number her days, the cardinal
mark the fallen leaf?
Blink and the light remains.
