One of the most brilliant books I’ve ever read (and reread many times) is Inkheart by the incomparable Cornelia Funke. She’s been described as the German J.K. Rowling, but I think she’s more than that. She has taken a concept – of characters being read into a story and characters coming into real life from a story – and brought it to a whole new level. Now when I read a novel, I tend to “Inkheart” it … and daydream of being in the book as myself, or of a character in the book ringing my doorbell. Fun on my own, but truly magical with my fourth graders during read-aloud time!
