From an Obituary
In the photo, his smile
is relaxed, cherubic
like Mona Lisa
but sweeter, more open
as if he knows something
no one else knows
but is trying
with his smile to teach us
what it is like to be
touched by God, but not
hampered by it
and then pushed to the side.
In fact, the text suggests
he pushed himself
to the side, graduated
from college, traveled
the country and ended up
in Portland, where many
have found homes
sometimes homes that are not homes.
The heart of Scott’s life was this:
he loved chickens and ducks.
His long-time companion
was Boo-Boo the goose
who lived and traveled
with Scott for twenty-three years.
Scott was also a member
of the Mayflower
Society, a true
pilgrim, not a tourist
and Boo-Boo was
in his own way, the same.
