Rain falls on palms and vines,
bordering the lagoon at Broad Creek.
It splatters against the wooden deck
of a fishing boat moored to the pier.
Even though the wind makes the reeds
appear to tremble, the ducks descend
into water not from fear of the storm.

Creatures of water, land, and air,
the seabirds splash down into the inlet,
and swim to the low-lying dunes.
Reaching the shore, the leader leaves
the lagoon to stand: one foot in water,
the other on sand as it lifts its head
into the immaculate air.
