I depend on others.
There was a time when it was not so,
or so I thought.
I watched, amazed, as Alex Honnold
climbed 3,600-foot El Capitan without ropes.
Without a lifeline, one slip
and he would be gone.
Skillfully and bravely, he made it.
I have fallen many times.
There has been a lifeline every time.
Who provided these? Mom, Dad,
siblings, my wife, my children, a friend.
Beyond all human support and grace,
I hear what satisfies
my longing, that I am loved.
God’s unconditional love
is my ultimate lifeline.
