When I was four
My mom made us a picnic lunch
We spread a blanket on the little hill
My brother, my mom and I
Behind our new house
And opened our picnic basket
There were sandwiches
A thermos of lemonade
And a package of Chuckles
The square-shaped gummy candy we all liked
My mom got the black one
My brother chose the green
And I got the red
That day was magical to me
Over fifty years ago and
I can still
Feel the softness of the blanket
Hear my mom’s laughter
Taste the cherry Chuckle
And feel nestled in the heart of my family
If I could go back to one place
In all my life
When life was uncomplicated
And filled with endless love
I might just choose
The little hill behind our house
In Michigan
