It struck me today
as dinnertime arrived
that if fairness were the norm
and a person like me
could change the way things are
I should skip this meal
or take it down to the shelter
or call my congressperson
and say I will only vote for her
if she fights for
children’s lunches
in Presidio County Texas
and East Carroll Parish Louisiana
and food shipments
to South Sudan
Burundi and Palestine
because it struck me today
as dinnertime arrived
that half the world
has never said the words
‘not hungry yet’
